Poplar Citizenship Early Childhood Center #11 is located at 100 Poplar Avenue and offers grades Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 4. Poplar is a neighborhood school, which has incorporated "Citizenship" as its theme since 1996. Students recite the school's Citizenship Pledge daily.
Poplar's mission is to teach students to become responsible decision-makers and high academic achievers. Each month teachers nominate students from their classrom to be selected as Student of the Month. This nomination is based on both academic and social accomplishments in the classroom.
The school provides an intergrated instructional program based on the NYS Learning Standards and is focused on meeting individual student needs. Poplar has Junior Participants and Student Teachers from Buffalo State College working in classrooms to support instruction. We also have tutors from the University at Buffalo and Canisius College.
Poplar runs the Bob Lanier after-school program five days a week until 6:00pm. The program provides academic tutoring, homework time, physical education, social activities, arts & crafts, field trips, and on-site special programs to provide a well-rounded, academically and culturally enriching program.
Poplar has a Parent Action Team that is comprised of teachers from each grade level. The role of the team is to plan activities that promote and encourage parent involvement in the school. There is also an active PTO (Parent-Teacher-Organization) in the building. The PTO is growing and works closely with the Bob Lanier Progam. Monthly meetings are held to update parents on school business and plan future activities.
Visitors are welcome at any time. They are required to sign in at the Main Office and obtain permission and a visitor's pass before visiting a classroom.
