HIGH SCHOOL MATH LEAGUE

The purpose of the Buffalo Public High School Math League is to encourage students to participate in math contests, enable students to meet “mathletes” from other schools, and to provide recognition for students excelling in mathematics. The BPS Math League is dedicated to bringing challenging mathematics to student participants.

The teaching and learning of mathematics cannot be accomplished in a vacuum.  We must encourage continuous, self-reflective growth and renewal for all stakeholders. The BPS Math League seeks to do just that.

The math league's contests challenge students and schools in interschool league competitions. Students compete for the highest school scores, while schools compete for the highest team score; the total of the top 5 scores in each school. These contests encourage a variety of problem-solving skills and methods, to improve students' abilities and understanding of mathematical connections, while having fun!

Most importantly, the math league fills a void for our students who must be prepared for the mathematical challenges of the 21st century.  The math league does this by providing students with an opportunity to compete monthly in challenging math contests.

Students from participating schools are recognized at an annual luncheon.  Awards are presented to encourage students’ mathematical endeavors. The feeling of pride and accomplishment these students, their parents, teachers and district administrators, feel cannot be measured.

At the awards luncheon held in May 2009, the team trophy was given to City Honors High school. The individual high scorer was Tian Yafel, a senior attending South Park High School.

During this school year, a Junior High Math League was established. They also attended an awards luncheon held in June 2009. The team trophy was awarded to City Honors.
