This literature study promotes two very fundamental ideas relevant to developing a "community of learners," literacy and character education.
Literacy is a compilation of those skills and strategies needed to build good language and literacy skills fundamental to learning to read and write in elementary school. These books promote literacy. It is linked to "The Apple of Ms. Mathews' Eye."
What is Character Education? From the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character– that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate."
The Roosevelt Early Childhood Center #65's Character Education Program is comprised of the following three categories: Word of the Month - Each month there is a word introduced to our learning. This word is generally accepted as an acceptable character trait expected by society at large. The teacher and students discuss, show examples, apply, and recognize this word when presented in several occasions.
Book of the Month - A book is suggested for reading. The book will be related to the word of the month. At the end of the month a selected grade level will display a bulletin board exhibiting a project related to the book and the word.
The Apple of Ms. Mathews' Eye - Students who have shown evidence of adapting the month's character trait are recommended to the Principal for recognition. Awards include:
- An apple placed on tree in front hall (each apple constitutes higher levels of rewards)
- A certificate with public announcement
Word of the Month "Epic's 9 Pathways to Character Traits" September - Respect October - Responsibility November - Citizenship December - Caring January - Honesty February - Fairness March - Trustworthiness April - Open-mindedness May - Self-reliance June - Perseverance
