WELCOME TO SIXTH GRADE!

Its hard to believe but the first month of school is over and we are well on our way.  It has been a great start in room 304!  Work and behavior have been very good.  In math we have started the year with a unit on graphing.  We have learned to make and read line graphs, bar graphs, pictographs and are currently working on circle graphs.  The next unit will be multi digit multiplication and division.  In ELA we have read two stories in the anthology and begun our direct instruction reading  program.
If you haven't already please send in a box of tissues for the class.  Allergy season is here and cold and flu season is just around the corner.  Also please have your child dress in layers for school.  The weather and temperature in the building can vary a great deal and not being dressed for it makes your child uncomfortable.  Please check that homework is being completed.  Any questions please call or send in a note.

Hello Parents and Guardians of Students in 311!

Hopefully, everyone has had a restful summer and is ready for Sixth Grade.  It is important that your child realizes that this is essentially the beginning of Junior High where curriculum, responsibility, organization, and independence all increase.  Homework is an important part of the curriculum.  Homework must be in each night (and yes, there is homework every night except an occasional break on the weekends).  There is also time for ELA work to be done in class.  If your child is overwhelmed with the amount of work, most likely they are not staying on task during independent work.

Social Studies instruction begins back, back back with the Stone Age.  In Science, we are learning about earthquakes, volcanoes, and such.  In math, we just finished looking at such concepts as how numbers are factored, how to find multiples, prime factorization, composite and prime numbers and pre-algebra.  Your child has a math project due on October 9th.  Ask them about it.  We are in the process of Diebels testing to see where your child’s reading level is at so we can accommodate their learning to the fullest.

Please make sure you make sure your child knows WHY they are in school.  We have a problem with talking in the classroom and me having to repeat directions several times as a result.  Other than that, we are off to a smooth start.  I look forward to working with you and your child this year.  If there are any questions, please feel free to call anytime.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to another school year at School #81. I would like to thank all of you for having your children ready to learn with all their school supplies.  This is going to be an exciting year. Grade 6 is where we begin to prepare your child for Junior High School. This year will be different on many levels: subject matter, expectations and responsibilities.

E.L.A. and Mathematics will focus on the District's Plan, which includes preparations for the State Assessments. I would like to use a supplement resource to aid in the test preparation and review. Each book will be used as review and homework for your child. The two books cost a total of $20.00. I would like to put the order in as soon as possible. Please send the money in a sealed envelope with your child's name on the outside.

Five Week Reports will be coming home very soon. This would be a good time to review and discuss with your child the importance of finishing homework and class work.

Thank you for your support in the education of your child.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the new school year! We have started the year out by diving right into our studies. In ELA, we continue to practice our reading skills and strategies. In SS, we are digging into the Stone Age and in science; matter is energizing us this quarter. We're currently wrapping up factors and multiples in math and will begin a new unit "Bits and Pieces" next week.

Parents, if you could please make sure your child completes his/her homework every night and returns it to school the next day. A weekly ELA packet goes home, while assignments in other areas are given daily as needed.

I am proud to partner with you in your child's 6th grade year of school! Please feel comfortable in contacting me if you have any questions or need any clarification about anything.
