The BPS Science Department is privileged to let you know that Deloris Anderson, 6th grade teacher at Campus West was awarded as the Western New York K-8 Science Educator of the Year by STANYS (Science Teachers Association New York State). Delores will be presented with this award at the Regional STANYS dinner on May 28, 2009. The Buffalo Science Teachers Association (BSTN) a professional learning organization affiliated with Buffalo State College nominated her for this award.
Delores started to work for the Buffalo Public School System in 1979 as a teacher’s aid. In 1990 she completed her teaching certification and was hire to work as an elementary teacher. In 1996 she transferred to Campus West, where she is currently a sixth grade teacher.
Delores has shown herself to be a consummate educational professional and an exceptional science teacher. Delores is considered to be a leader among her peers. She continuously demonstrates thorough knowledge of science curriculum and instructional practice. Her Science lessons always incorporate learning activities; incorporating demonstrations or participation exercises, while making connections to math and literacy skills, which allow for enriched and meaningful student learning.
She has presented at many workshops for the BPS Science department and the BPS TEAM Science kits. She is a lead facilitator for the 21st century Science program that just started this January under the MSP- Science Focus grant. Delores has also been asked to present in school districts outside of New York State for LabAids, a nationally recognized company. Along with presenting on behalf of BPS and LabAids, she has also been asked to presented innumerable staff development sessions related to the science curriculum at the STANYS conferences and at NSTA (National Science Teacher Association) annual conference and workshops.
She has been a strong advocate of "Hands-on, Minds-on" educational practice. She has been instrumental in developing hands-on science kits and has provided untold hours of in-service support for teachers utilizing those kits. Besides her involvement in science education, Ms. Anderson has also supported the entire school community with her participation in after-school and evening activities including science nights. She has also been a coach and a judge for Science Olympiad teams. She is an active member of BSTN, STANYS, and NSTA.
As a person, she is creative, organized and caring. Delores is a person of persistence and integrity and has demonstrated dedication to her students throughout her career. Perhaps as a result of these qualities, students often see science as exciting. Besides exhibiting a keen knowledge of the subject matter, she gives students a wonderful "life" orientation. As a result, many of her students consider the idea of pursuing a career field in science.
