Emerson Takes 1st Place in Trajectory Event at Science Olympiad
Katherine Matos and Katilyn Rosso received gold metals for the Trajectory event, after finishing in first place at this years Lake Erie/Niagara Regional Science Olympiad High School Competition at Clarence High School on Saturday, February 7, 2009.
The students were required to design, construct, calibrate and operate a device capable of launching a projectile into a target using energy provided by nonmetallic elastic solids. Along with the 1st place win for Matos and Rosso, Najla Storey received an “Outstanding Student” award. Emerson also won the overall “TEAM” Award.
Emerson’s Science Olympiad Team was made up of Katlyn Rosso, Senior, Naomi Deane, David Harrison, Najla Storey, Katherine Matos, all juniors and Gabriel Burgos, a sophomore. The team was coached by Jason Mayle and assisted by Sandy Harrigan-Banas, both Science teachers at Emerson. Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing male, female and minority interest in science, creating a technologically-literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers. These goals are achieved by participating in Science Olympiad tournaments.
This year, the students from Emerson competed against 36 other teams from as far away as Chautauqua Lake and Springville to Starpoint and Alden. They competed against suburban and private schools such as Nichols, Williamsville, and Orchard Park. This years Science Olympiad Competition was composed of 25 events that the teams had to prepare for and could compete in.
Congratulations Emerson on a wonderful job!
