WORKING PAPERS

 

 

An employment certificate, often referred to as "working papers", is required for minors under 18 years of age before they may begin work. High school graduates, minors who work for their parents and minors who do industrial homework are included in this group.

HOW TO OBTAIN PART-TIME WORKING PAPERS

You must first...

 

Complete one of the below described application forms (this form must be completed by the applicant and the applicant’s school counselor).

 

·         AT-17 - to be completed if you are applying for part-time working papers

·         AT-22 - to be completed ONLY if you are applying for a newspaper carrier permit, child model work permit, farm work permit, or street trades permit

 

Copies of the following items must be attached to the completed application:

 

·         Student’s birth or baptismal certificate for proof of age

·         Student’s social security card

·         Form AT-16 (a physician’s certificate showing that the student has had a physical within 12 months prior to issuance of working papers and that states the student is physically fit to work [this form is attached]

 

Then...

  • You must turn in your completed application form to your school counselor.
  • If you are applying during holiday or vacation times, or are home schooled, you may turn in your completed application form to the Attendance Services Office, City Hall Room #428 [hours are 8:00a.m. – 3:45p.m. Monday-Friday].  Or mail your application to: Student Support Services, 428 City Hall, Buffalo, NY  14202.  Applications will not be taken from students during normal school hours.

 

How to Obtain Full-time Working Papers

 

  • Students applying for full-time working papers, who are non-graduates but seeking to obtain a GED, must schedule an appointment for an Exit Hearing with their school Administrator.  Your parent/guardian must appear with you to give consent. 
  • You must complete the attached application form [with the above mentioned documents]
  • If you have turned 17 years of age beginning July 1st, your parent/guardian must also provide a notarized statement of the following “I, [parent/guardian name, the parent of [student’s name] give permission for my  [son/daughter] to drop out of school.”
  • If you have graduated from high school, you do not need to meet with school authorities, but you must provide a photocopy of your high school diploma.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: 

 

Any student having multiple unexcused absences (10 or more) will not be granted working papers until such time that the student has completed two weeks of school without any absences or tardies.
