Story of Stuff (where our junk comes from)
Annie Leonard describes The Materials Economy. Some might call it an extreme view from a raging environmentalist. Unfortunately much of the information is accurate and tells a sorry story about our present framework for the global economy.

First Hand Learning with Bill Rogers
First Hand Learning, Inc. a not-for-profit, science education company headquartered in Buffalo, NY. Bill Rogers (Director of Out of school Programs) acts as the liaison between South Park’s Green Team and FHL’s Science Firsthand program, an NSF-supported after school science program for middle school youth. To date this partnership has resulted in SPHS students volunteering as mentors with the Valley Community Center’s Water Monitor Team to sample and test Buffalo River water at three locations each month and to submit their reports to Buffalo-Niagara Riverkeeper. Last summer three SPHS students had part-time positions with Science Firsthand, working as program assistants and mentors to younger students. The major source of mentors for Science Firsthand’s thirteen program locations have been colleges with service learning courses, but First Hand Learning is currently collaborating with Environmental Studies teacher Mr. Adam Hovey, to pilot a mentor-training program for high school juniors and seniors at SPHS. One goal will be to partner the high school mentors with the college mentors. High school students often partner with the SF program manager at each site. Volunteer work with Science Firsthand represents a good opportunity for high school students to experience what science learning is like in a non-school setting and at the same time to be community service role models and mentors to younger students.
Buffal Niagara Riverkeeper
Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper began in 1988 as a small community organization advocating for improved water quality and public access on the Buffalo River through the Buffalo River Remedial Action Plan. In 2005 group leaders sought Riverkeeper status, and since that time the organization has initiated regional projects such as the Riverwatch volunteer waterway monitoring program, regional shoreline cleanups and shoreline restoration of Niagara River tributaries. The mission of Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is to promote, preserve and protect the natural and historical environments of the Buffalo and Niagara Rivers, all tributaries and their environs for the benefit of the communities that enjoy these resources. Bigger Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper began in 1988 as a small community organization called Friends of the Buffalo River. The Friends advocated for improved water quality and public access on the Buffalo River, organized community cleanups of the shoreline, and worked successfully on important policy issues such as setback ordinances, a Buffalo River Greenway plan and an Urban Canoe Trail guide. In 2000, a strategic planning process led the Friends to expand their mission beyond the Buffalo River watershed to include the entire Niagara River watershed in Western New York. In 2005 group leaders chose to seek Riverkeeper status, seeing opportunities in the network of support available to Waterkeeper Alliance members. Riverkeeper has since become deeply involved in both regional projects as well as many community projects, such as the restoration of pocket parks on the Buffalo River. One of the new programs initiated with the transition to Riverkeeper was the Riverwatch volunteer waterway monitoring program, which includes waterway monitoring for nine parameters as well as a variety of other volunteer opportunities. The mission of Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper is to promote, preserve and protect the natural and historical environments of the Buffalo and Niagara Rivers, all tributaries and their environs for the benefit of the communities that enjoy these resources. Through our work, we seek to: • Restore the ecological health of the Buffalo and Niagara River systems, assuring clean water for fishing, swimming and other uses by local communities • Improve public access along local waterways for citizens of surrounding communities and the region • Encourage community awareness, "ownership" and stewardship of our waterways • Support sustainable development of the region's economy • Express and celebrate the cultural and historic fabric of our waterfront communities • Act as a regional waterway advocacy organization
ReTree Western New York
What started as a way to re-forest metropolitan Buffalo in response to a freak October 2009 snowstorm has grown to an all-volunteer organization with hundreds of citizens pitching in to plant trees in Western New York’s neighborhoods. Re-Tree WNY has planted thousands of trees with money it has raised and plays a key role in the eco-structure of our community. The National Arbor Day Foundation has bestowed their 2008 Project Award on Re-Tree WNY. We have planted trees to sequester the carbon emitted when conventioneers come to visit our area and continue to partner with the Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau on this Green Hospitality initiative.
