NEW PTSO READY TO GO

On Thursday, October 22nd a meeting was held in the school cafeteria to review the various positions and responsibilities to form a new Parent Teacher Student Organization at BAVPA.

Gloria Fuentes (BAVPA Mom) had stepped up and volunteered to plan the meeting to get our new PTSO going and facilitated the meeting, attended by about 30 people.  The meeting began at 535pm and adjourned at 635pm

Attendees signed up and paid $5.00 to become a PTSO member.  Nominations for PTSO Board Members were sought and several folks stepped up to fill the various positions other than president.  Gloria Fuentes was nominated by the group for the position of president.  There were no challenges to any of the nominees so the group as a whole was voted in unanimously.

Your new BAVPA PTSO Board Members are:

President:  Gloria Fuentes

V. President:  Kim DeJesus

Recording Secretary:  Monica Frazier

Corresponding Secretary:  Deby Lefevre

Treasurer:  Natalie Wills

In addition to the PTSO Board Members three parents stepped forward to volunteer to be representatives to attend the monthly District Parent Coordinating Council (DPCC) meetings.

They are:  Elaine Mootrie, Drew Kelley and Gloria Fuentes

The main business discussed was Principal Darren Brown explaining the amount of Title 1 Parent Involvement Funds available this year. Those funds will be used for informational events to give parents an overview of the ELA and Math curriculum and what parents can expect and how to help your child reach their achievement goals.

There was further discussion on the importance of returning those Free/Reduced Lunch applications, even if you don’t qualify.  The amount of Title 1 Funds our school receives is directly linked to those applications.  Those lunch applications have a huge impact on thousands of dollars worth of funding for other programs as well.  It is vital to get those forms sent in.

This led to a more general discussion on how to improve school to home communication.  Many attendees have good ideas and the PTSO will work to help improve communication every way possible.

There was also some discussion on fundraising ideas to help support school activities.

It was a good first meeting and the PTSO looks forward to getting things underway.  We also encourage parents to help out in whatever way you can to get even more involved with your child’s school and make BAVPA even better.  Thank you for your support.

Next PTSO Monthly Meeting:  Thursday, November 19th – 530pm in the Cafeteria
