Literature

We begin fifth grade literature with a 10 week unit using the Junior Great Books series.  With it, students will be reading a variety of classic short stories and learning to respond to literature by providing evidence from the text as support to their statements.  Students will engage in shared inquiry discussions, with the intent of deepening their understanding of their reading.  We use what we have learned through shared inquiry to then study full works of literature.  As the year progresses, we revisit Junior Great Books.  By the end of the year, the fifth graders will have completed in-depth studies of a minimum of five novels, as well as several short stories, poems, and essays.
