Welcome Letter

  • Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year! My name is Mrs. Smith and this will be my 19th year teaching and my 8th year teaching at School 6 B.E.S.T. I have earned a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Literacy.  I have completed extensive TESOL coursework through Niagagra University to help our ELL students learn better. This summer, I was involved in an in-depth mediation course to support my student's emotional health.

I'm really looking forward to getting to your your child.  My ultimate goal for this year is for each of my students to succeed and to become independent, responsible learners. To accomplish this goal there will be regular homework. Students are expected to read for 20 minutes, study their spelling and vocabulary and complete a homework sheet for Math and ELA every night Monday-Thursday.  You can help your child by providing time and space for your child to complete their work. Students will regularly be assessed using formative and summative assessments.  This is for the benefit of your child so we can assess their growth and I can adjust my instruction if necessary. Grades will be available on Infinite campus and Progress Reports and Report Cards will be sent home each quarter.

Student learning is a team effort.  I want us to work together in order to have a progressive year with your child. Please be sure to check your child’s backpack for homework and notes. The take-home folders will include any homework assignments and notes from school. Additonally, please provide me with an updated phone number any time yours changes and join our class REMIND.

Our daily schedule includes 90 minute Literacy period and a 90 minute Math period with area rotations and small group instruction. Integrated into this students meet in groups with other students who are at their level. We also will study Science and Social Studies units throughout the year. Our Specials Schedule includes Library,  2 Music, 2 Art and Gym three times every six day cycle. Students need to have sneakers to participate in Physical Education days and should be dressed in comfortable layers.  It is important that your child attends school each and every day and makes up any missed work.  Literacy is the first subject each morning so its helpful if you choose to walk or drive your child to school that they are on time. If your child misses school due to illness, please provide me with a note so that their absence won’t be marked illegal.

If you ever have a question or concern, please feel free to jot a note. Also, do not hesitate to email me or call me at your convenience.  I can be reached at 816-3637 or jsmith2@buffaloschools.org  anytime and I will return your call/email within 24 hours. My phone numner is (716) 348-0092 or you can connect withme through REMIND. If you would ever like to observe your child within our classroom, I have an open door policy, but you will need to stop into teh office for a pass first.  I update our class website regularly.  It can be found/webpages/jsmith2/.  To sign up for updates, text @210218best to the number 81010.

I truly believe that when a teacher and a parent communicate on a regular basis regarding the child, the child has a more successful school year. If you have any information about your child that you believe I should know please feel free to contact me! The more I know about your child the better I can accommodate and effectively meet their needs. We are going to have a great year!

    Yours in Education,

    Mrs. J. Smith
