For the 3rd year, WNY United hosted the Red Ribbon Rally for the five South
Buffalo Promise zone Schools to increase awareness, educate and mobilize our community to participate in substance abuse prevention efforts. More than 500 hundred students participated including Hillery Park Elementary's
Academic Olympians. Students were bused to South Park High School wearing
red and showing their commitment to being drug free. The Leaders In
Training for all four South Buffalo elementary schools made banners
presenting a positive drug or alcohol related message for their school.
These banners will also be displayed at First Night Buffalo and the Bison's
Red Ribbon Baseball Game in May. Students listened to speakers from the
DEA, the Erie County Sherriff's Office, Senator Tim Kennedy, and Ms. Schuta
(principal of South Park) talk about the importance of living a healthy drug
free lifestyle. The South Park chorus, band, and cheerleaders joined along
with some local mascots entertained the students throughout the rally. It
was a great event shared by all and showcased the positive choices our
students in South Buffalo are making.
