    Dear Parents & Caregivers,

It’s the beginning of a new and exciting year and we are extremely anxious to get started!  We have a variety of fun and stimulating activities planned for your child during the school year.   Furthermore, our goal this year is to create a classroom of independent children that are eager and excited to learn.  You will be amazed at just how much your child will grow this year.

Your child will be introduced to letters, numbers, shapes, colors, pre-reading and pre-writing activities as well as weekly themes that promote learning through exploring.  Every week your child will be introduced to a new letter and number.  We have created many enjoyable activities aligned with Big Day for Pre-k, Building Blocks and The Magic Penny Curriculum that will help keep your child active and hands-on in the learning process.

We will keep you informed throughout the school year of your child’s growth.  Our pre-kindergarten program is designed to assess your child’s development throughout the year.  We use the CIRCLES assessment three times a year to help determine your child’s progress. We have a formal progress report that highlights strengths as well as what needs improvement.  We also have two parent/teacher conferences throughout the school year.  We are always available for informal conferences as needed.

Homework calendars will be given out at the beginning of each month, to supply you with supplemental activities to support your child’s learning.  Homework assignments are important for both the student and the parent, as it reinforces concepts covered each week, promotes spending time with one another and builds meaningful conversations.

Your child will have a communication folder that will come back and forth to school daily.   It is very important that you look through the folder and check for monthly snack schedules, upcoming fieldtrips, special events, forms that need to be signed and returned, as well as days that your children do not have school.

Attendance is extremely important for academic success. If your child is unable to attend school, please send in a written excuse the very next day.  Otherwise, it will be considered an unexcused absence.  If your child is ill and will be out of school for more than two days please call and inform us.

We have a school-wide behavior incentive program using eagle tickets.  Students earn eagle tickets for positive behavior.  Every Friday, the tickets are put in a raffle basket and if your child’s name is picked they get a special surprise.

On your child’s “special day” they are required to bring in a snack to share as well as a container of Clorox wipes.  Snacks are given out after rest time.  We ask that you send your child in with a snack that they can share with 18 students every month.  Snacks can include fresh fruit, pretzels, crackers, cereal bars, fruit snacks, popcorn, juice boxes, bottled water and so on.  On your child’s special day, they may bring in a favorite toy or book to share with the class.  Please check the monthly snack schedule for your child’s special day.

We ask that you send your child with an extra pair of clothes (socks and underwear as well) in a large zip lock bag so that in case of an accident we have the appropriate clothing to give your child.   In addition to a bookbag and extra clothes, we ask that you bring in a small rug or blanket to be used during rest time.

Again, we are looking forward to a fulfilling school year with your child.  Please feel free to drop by and spend the day or just an hour in our classroom.  We would love to have you and it would mean the world to your little one.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call (816-3260).  Thank you for your time and effort in enrolling your child in the pre-kindergarten program at Lovejoy Discovery School!
