Family Involvement Policy

The International School, BPS #45 is committed to developing strong partnerships with families to help ALL our students achieve their highest potential.

Our school encourages families to:

 -          Ensure that students attend school promptly and prepared to learn.
 -          Show respect for self, school, and cultural differences in others.
 -          Maintain highest expectations for student success.
 -          Communicate on a regular basis with teachers, stay aware of school events, and participate whenever possible in school activities.
 -          Become active decision makers in school policy and practice, including involvement in committees such as the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO), Comprehensive Education Plan (CEP), School-Based Management Team (SBMT), District Parent Coordinating Council (DPCC).

The International School will provide:

 -          A welcoming, open-door atmosphere which encourages family participation and school-day visitation.
 -          A rigorous academic environment that supports the unique learning style of each student.
 -          A setting which respects the cultural, racial, and ethnic differences of every student.
 -          Regular verbal and written communication with all families, providing additional support for parents of English Language Learners (ELL)
 -          Opportunities for families to improve their skills so that they may better assist their students in achieving their highest academic potential. These opportunities include access to district-sponsored family resources, academic-based PTO meetings, and the availability of a parent facilitator who can provide supplemental at home learning materials.

Parent-School Compact

            It is our goal to provide students with the opportunity for maximum personal growth.  We believe this goal can be achieved through positive and supportive relationships with parents, students, and teachers.  The expected outcome of this goal is to develop students who can reason, solve problems, and communicate effectively, resulting in lifelong learners and responsible citizens.  The responsibilities of these three key participants are:

SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES

        Respect the cultural, racial, and ethnic differences of each child.

        Provide an environment that supports the unique learning style of each student.

        Maintain high standards of academic achievement and positive behavior.

        Provide high quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive learning environment.

        Demonstrate professional behavior and a positive attitude.

Assign homework that is an extension of what is learned in the classroom and provide corrective feedback.

        Document ongoing assessment of each child’s academic progress.

        Consistently inform parents of their child’s progress.

        Develop ways to involve parents in the school program.

Provide information about bullying and take corrective action against bullying.

 

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Believe that I can learn.

Show respect for myself, my school, and other people.

Attend school regularly and on time, with a positive attitude.

Respect the cultural differences of all members of the school community.

Abide by all school rules and district rules as outlined in the Code of Conduct for Students and Parents.

Accept responsibility for my actions.

Do my homework every night and ask for help when I need it.

Shall not participate in bullying of any type.

 

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure that my child attends school regularly, has adequate rest and is on time.

Maintain high expectations for my child to succeed.

Encourage my child to talk to teachers if he/she does not understand assignments.

Praise my child and comment on improvements he/she has made.

Communicate with teachers, attend parent-teacher conferences and school events when possible.

Make sure my child has all supplies and that his/her notebooks are organized.

Establish a study time for my child; review homework assignments and check for understanding.

Check assignment notebook daily.

Emphasize the importance of following school and district rules.

Discuss bullying with my children and discourage children from participating in bullying of any type.
