Roswell Summer Science Intern Program

  • Dear Science Teachers:

This is to announce that Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Summer Cancer Research Experience Program for high school students on-line application is open at our website: The deadline for applications is: January 10, 2015.

This summer internship program provides real-world research experience to high school juniors who are motivated towards a career in science. Interns conduct their own cancer-related research project at Roswell Park Cancer Institute during the seven week program (June 22nd to August 7th.) During their time working in the laboratory they receive continuous mentorship and guidance from research faculty and their laboratory staff which cultivates their research proficiency and professional development. The core research experience is supported by a weekly course where they will learn about such topics as hallmarks of cancer biology, scientific communication skills and research ethics. Field trips to life sciences companies and attendance at Institute-sponsored seminars serve to further intern’s awareness about cutting-edge cancer science and science careers. As a conclusion to their research experience interns present a scientific poster on the results of their research project with peers from their program at the program’s science conference. The immersive experience as a whole enables interns to make informed decisions about science majors in college and pursuing a science career.

Please inform high school juniors (or those who are the academic equivalent of a junior) at your school about the summer research program. In particular, you should encourage students to apply who demonstrate a keen interest in science and whom you can imagine performing well in a research laboratory where teamwork, creative thought, strong communication and a high level of persistence are required.

It is suggested that teachers review the application instructions and sample personal statement questions on the website with students before they applying ( (Note: The $20 application fee will be waived for students who are enrolled in the National School Lunch Program.)

For program dates and details please see the attached brochure and the website referenced above for more details. If you have additional questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me by email ( or phone (716-845-5944.)
