As a community we have been faced with a challenge to protect ourselves and limit the spread of COVID-19, and our lives will be very different over the next few weeks. Many of our normal routines and habits will be different. Our children are resilent but when routines are changed they need support in undertsanding why. Children may not understand all the medical lingo and news coverage. Therefore, it is important for us adults to stay positive and help comfort them while also being honest with them. Encourage healthy habits and model healthy habits with regard to screen time, eating habits, sleep routines, and emotional regulation. Children pick up on the emotions and actions they see from those around them. If adults have a positive attitude children will stay positive. Reassuring them that we will be ok by staying healthy is important. Below are links from our BPS Crisis Team, the CDC, and the Mental Health Advoates of WNY to offer advice and support in talking to your family and keeping everyone physically and mentally healthy during this period of heighten stress and anxiety.
