Meet Ms. Gilmour
-
My name is Ms. Kelly Gilmour. I have been an educator for over 16 years. I taught first grade at Lorraine for 7 years, prior to that I taught 4th, 5th and 6th grade at various other schools. The 2020-2021 school year is my 1st year teaching 2nd grade! I love children and enjoy my job very much. I have two children of my own. My children, our dog, and I live in South Buffalo. My children go to City Honors and St Francis High School. My son is in 12th grade and my daughter is in 9th grade this year. My son wants to be a pilot and my daughter a marine biologist.
I love to travel and try to go somewhere different once a year. I am very athletic. (I am a runner, I play softball, and soccer and I used to teach kickboxing.) I've run 9 half marathons and in May 2016 I ran my first full marathon (26.2 miles)! You will definately see me running the streets of South Buffalo with my little Jack Russell, Molly. I also love to read, this summer I read many books! This summer we also spent many days at the beach, hung out at our pool, went swimming, and traveled, among other things.
I believe that school should be a place that children want to go and it should be a place they enjoy. My goal as an educator has always been to try to create lessons that engage students by allowing them to explore and discover. As a result of this philosophy, we do a lot of projects and hands on exploration.
I am very proud to say that I was the "Bully Free" chairperson at Lorraine Elementary for over 5 years. I worked to bring many "Bully Free" programs to Lorraine in an effort to change the culture of the school. Every year as the chairperson, I planned a Bully Free 5K race and community event in an effort to raise money to help keep our Bully Free theme. To date we have raised almost $30,000! I feel very passionate about the "Bully Free" Lorraine Elementary community and wished to see it grow stronger with each passing year. Hopefully it can be revived in the coming years.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I welcome you to come into our room to help out anytime.
