Career and Financial Management

  • Career and Financial Management is a required course for high school students in New York State. This is a half-year course designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn about the features of our economy, explore a variety of careers, learn skills and competencies needed for success in the workplace, and to begin exploring financial literacy. Students will begin, or continue, to develop a career plan and develop skills to become a successful citizen, employer, or employee


    CFM Part A- is a portfolio based course. During the course, students will be required to complete a series of tasks, or components, used to build a finished portfolio. All students must complete all sections of the portfolio with a grade of 65% or higher.

    Course Outline
    This course will cover several topics surrounding careers and financial management such as:

    - Personal Ambitions and Interests
    - Career Planning
    - Professional Communications
    - Budgeting
    - Banking
    - Tax Liabilities

    Grading Policy
    Grades will be calculated based on the following areas:
    - Assignments/Classwork (**Assignments include notes, journals,or writings in notebook during class)

    - Homework ( Must be turned in on the assigned day)

    - Tests/Quizzes

    - Projects/Portfolio Components

    - Citizenship/Attendance/Participation

    -All assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests, are graded on a point system. Grades are determined by total points earned by total points possible.

    Homework Policy:

    -Homework must be turned in on the assigned day.

    -The assignments are collected and graded

    Incomplete/ Unfinished homework:

    -If you do not complete, turn in, or finish the homework you must attend morning detention.

    -Miss Heider will inform you in the beginning of class if you owe her a detention for the following morning.

    -When homework is not completed on the assigned day, it is only worth half for the late penalty.

    -Late assignments and homework never receive full credit.

    -The assignment must be completed during the detention in order to receive the half credit.

    -Morning detention begins at 7:20. If you do not show up or come late, I will write a discipline slip to the assistant principal’s office.

    Project/Bookwork Policy:

    -Projects and bookwork must be turned on the assigned day.

    -Projects and bookwork will be reviewed that night to see if everyone completed the assignment. Grades may take a few days to process (Expect 4 days for instructor to give back)

    Incomplete/ Unfinished Bookwork:

    -If you do not complete, turn in, or finish the bookwork you must attend morning detention.

    -Miss Heider will inform you in the beginning of class if you owe her a detention for the following morning.

    -When bookwork assignments are not completed on the assigned day, it is only worth half for the late penalty.

    -Late assignments and homework never receive full credit.

    -Morning detention begins at 7:20. If you do not show up or come late, I will write a discipline slip to the assistant principal’s office.

    -Complete bookwork assignments can be corrected for a better grade.

    -Student Book work /notebook checks work on a "2 strike basis":

    • Strike 1: Students turn in notebook on assigned day/Notebook is graded
    • Strike 2: Students make needed corrections and show Miss Heider
    • When making corrections, students must bring their notebook to Miss Heider in the morning in room 305.
    • After strike 2, work will not be accepted. Only two chances are given.

    Late Projects:

    -Late projects receive a 10 point deduction for each day they are late.

    -Project grades cannot be altered.

    Behavior Policy:

    If the instructor has to remind a student about his or her behavior or attitude with 2 warnings the student must attend detention directly after class.

    -Poor or disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated. If behavior escalates, student will be removed and escorted by security.
