Sixth grade students study ancient civilizations, and I try to follow right along with it. I ask the question, "How important is art in uncovering secrets to the past?" In this grade the students are really exposed to many cultural contributions. By the end of the year they are pretty convinced that much of what we know about the past comes from the art they left behind. When they get a little tired of "social studies" in art then I tell them it's time to take a vacation, and we come back to the present.
