Context Clues and Multiple meaning words

  • Context clues ~ the words that surround an unfamiliar word or phrase that readers can use to figure out the meaning of the unknown word or phrase they are unfamiliar with

    Multiple-meaning words ~ words that have different meanings depending on how they are used in a sentence, or context

    *the best way to determine the meaning of a word is to look at its context:

    1. The bear leaves traces of itself on the trail in the forest.  (marks or evidence)

    2. The kindergarten student traces letters when she is learning to write.  (copies or goes over)
