  • What is Home and Career Skills?

    It is NOT a cooking class!

    Home and Career Skills is a New York State mandated course taught in grades 5-8 in the discipline of Family and Consumer Sciences (FACS).  It is a study of every day living skills. This class is designed to teach skills needed in every area of work, home, and family life.

    This course is the vehicle through which the NYS Learning Standards for Family and Consumer Sciences (Personal Health and Fitness, A safe and Healthy Environment, and Resource Management) are delivered to students.  The course also addresses the NYS Learning Standards for Career Development and Occupational Studies (Career Development, Integrated Learning, and Universal Foundation Skills). 

    In addition, Home and Career Skills supports the NYS Common Core Learning Standards by providing real-world opportunities in which to apply the key ideas and skills taught in the academic courses.

    Home and Career Skills is organized into 10 content topics.  These topics include:
