The Star Spangled Banner is the National Anthem of the United States of America. An anthem is a song that brings people together for a cause. Our anthem helps us remember the struggles of all the people who helped us win and keep our independence.
The lyrics of the anthem were composed by Francis Scott Key after he saw the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships during the War of 1812.
The “Star Spangled Banner” is a nickname for our nation’s flag. Fifty white stars on a blue background represent the fifty states. The seven red and six white stripes represent the thirteen original colonies.
The Star Spangled Banner - LyricsOh say can you seeBy the dawn's early lightWhat so proudly we hailedAt the twilight's last gleamingWho's broad stripes and bright starsThrough the perilous fightO'er the ramparts we watchedWere so gallantly streamingAnd the rockets' red glareThe bombs bursting in airGave proof through the nightThat our flag was still thereOh, say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave?O'er the land of the freeand the home of the brave.
