Alumni Association History
The current South Park High School Alumni Association was born out of the planning/preparation for the 75th anniversary in 1990. The principal at the time, Dr. Paul A. Lafornara, organized a fledgling group of alumni, faculty and friends to brainstorm how we could drum up interest for the 75th anniversary. He put pleas out to the local media, via the newspapers, chased down leads from reunions he saw planned in the local papers and commissioned a small group of retired alumni to volunteer to come to the school and begin creating a database. For about 6 months, they came to the building everyday and typed the thousands of names that were listed in the 75 years worth of yearbooks. Gradually, addresses were added, as they became available, and slowly the current data base was created. This data base includes the names, and addresses, and email addresses (when available) of about 35,000 alumni.
Eventually a Board of Directors was established, by-laws were drawn up and the association was born. They organized and carried out the 75th anniversary held in May of 1990. This included a sit down, prime rib dinner for 1500 alumni, family and friends. Five years later, they carried out the 80th anniversary with a dinner for 800 at the Hearthstone Manor. In March 2005, the Association hosted a gala to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the school at Lucarelli's Banquet Center in Lackawanna. This year we are hosting the 100th Anniversary on May 2, 2015 at the Adam's Mark Hotel. Mark your calendars and plan on joining us for this gala celebration.
We updated our mailing lists in 1994, 2008 and most recently in 2014 by joining force with the Harris Publishing company. Over 1700 people purchased the new directory and we have had a lot of buzz about how useful it has been to many alumni. They help us updated our lists and provided us with thousands of new contacts. If you would like to volunteer for the association, join our leadership or believe you could make any other sort of contribution to the betterment of the association, please contact us at: SPHSAA@aol.com or contact Peg Hannon directly at South Park High School (716.816.4828)
