    STRATEGIC INTERVENTION COURSES

     

    Course Name: ELA I-II Seminar in English (AIS Lab)

    Course Number: EN01G/SEO1G

    EN02G/SEO2G


    Developmental Level: Grades 9-10 Strategic Level

    Length of Course: 1 period per day, 6 days per cycle/1 period per day, 3 days per cycle

    Credit: 1 credit for ELA course/Lab is non-credit bearing

    Prerequisite: Level I or II on the ELA 8 State assessment or Level I or II on the NYS

    ELA Comprehensive Regents Examination

    Assessment: ELA Comprehensive Regents Examination

    Students in need of strategic intervention are enrolled in a benchmark ELA course with one Academic

    Intervention Services lab period. During the Lab period, students receive instruction designed to build

    fluency and decoding skills, help students transfer these skills to content area reading (informational

    text), help students answer literal and inferential questions to increase comprehension, and improve

    students’ ability to write coherent multi-paragraph answers. In cases where students need extra

    preparation for the Regents assessment, teachers use item analyses to design lessons targeting specific

    areas of deficiency.

     

    INTENSIVE INTERVENTION COURSE

    Developmental Level: Intensive Intervention

    Length of Course: 1 period per day, 6 days per cycle /1 period 3 days per cycle

    Credit: 1 credit

    Prerequisite: Level I or II on the ELA 8 State assessment, failure to meet cut scores on

    Placement Test Battery

    Assessment: End-of-Course 9, Programmatic assessments, TOSCRF

     

    The English 9 course is designed to provide intensive intervention for students struggling with basic

    reading and writing skills. The course provides a comprehensive approach to literacy, including

    instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, morphology, fluency, vocabulary, grammar,

    comprehension and writing. Embedded assessments and progress indicators allow teachers to differentiate instruction.
