Graduation Requirements

  • GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

       

    The New York State Department of Education and the Board of Regents of New York State determine Graduation Requirements and Guidelines for all high schools in New York. 

     

    NEW YORK STATE REGENTS DIPLOMA  (22 units)

    -        English............................................................ 4 units

    -        Social Studies................................................ 4 units

    -        Science ........................................................... 3 units

    -        Mathematics................................................... 3 units

    -        Health ............................................................. ½ unit

    -        Art and/or music........................................... 1 unit

    -        LOTE............................................................... 1 unit

    -        Physical Education........................................ 2units

                                                                                          ------------

                                                                     TOTAL 18 ½ units

     

    The remaining 3½ credits may be earned by taking additional courses in the above subject areas or by taking additional elective courses.

     

    Credits for elective courses are earned by students as they complete their culinary sequence: CFM A, CFM B, Hospitality 10, Bakery 11, Restaurant 11, Kitchen 11, Banquets 11, Bakery 12, Restaurant 12, Kitchen 12 and Banquets 12. Students also take Gourmet Cooking in 12th grade. 

     

    PLEASE NOTE:

    Physical Education

    A student must participate in physical education each year he/she is in school and must earn the 1/2 credit awarded per year for successful completion of the course.

     

    Languages Other Than English, LOTE

    A one-year language study requirement must be completed (sometimes completed by the end of 8th grade). This may be accomplished either by passing the NYS Language Proficiency examination or by earning a passing grade in one year of second language (LOTE) study after entering high school.

      

    Exams Required for a New York State

    Regents Diploma

    The State of New York has established a requirement that students must successfully pass selected Regents Comprehensive Examinations in order to earn a diploma at any high school in New York State. All students must pass the following Regents examinations:

     

    • (1)English Language Arts
    • (1) Mathematics (Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2)
    • (1) HIstory (Global History & Geography or US History)
    • (1) Science (Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics)
    • (1) Additional exam in Math, Science, or History or complete the CDOS Pathway

     

    Students who have an Individualized Education Plan must take the Regents exams that are required in their class. Should they fail, the State will allow them to take the corresponding Regents Competency Test(s) for that subject.

     

    New York State Regents Diploma with

    Advanced Designation (22units)

     

    1.        A student must meet the general requirements for a Regents diploma.

     

    2.        A student must pass the Regents Comprehensive Examination in a second language (does not apply to students gaining a 5-unit sequence in Vocational Education - Culinary/Hospitality).

     

    3.        A student must pass three Regents examinations in mathematics:  Integrated Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II and Trigonometry.

     

    4.        A student must pass two Regents examinations in Science (one of them must be the Living Environment Regents Examination).

     

    Local Diploma

     

    For students with disabilities who enter grade 9 in 2005 and thereafter, testing requirements for a local diploma may also be met by achieving a score between 55 and 64 on required Regents examinations (English, Mathematics, Science, Global History and U.S. History).
