      Covid Safety Protocols & Procedures

Dear MECHS Parents, Guardians, and Caretakers,

Please see the attached letter regarding updated COVID testing practices and a new consent form from Mr. Potter.  (Updated December 9, 2021).

We strongly encourage families to provide consent for this testing opportunity and to help us all keep the MECHS family healthy and safe.

Please Read the Attached Letter From Principal Potter Regarding New BPS Surveillance Testing Consent Needed Immediately.

      * The District Mask Policy will be Strictly Enforced.  Students must wear a mask while in the building.  Students should wear a mask to school every day.

Masks are required for all individuals inside school buildings regardless of vaccination status. When outside, masks may be removed if activities are designed to keep students socially distanced for most of the time. Exemptions during  RED ZONE periods will not be considered for in-school instruction. Exemptions during ORANGE ZONE periods will be considered by the District Medical Advisory Team for vaccinated persons with documented medical needs.

      Face Covering Guidelines

      • All students, administrators, faculty, and staff members will be expected to wear a face-covering at all times while in the building.
      • Students will of course be allowed to remove their face covering while eating or drinking.
      • Students will be allowed to remove their face covering outdoors while maintaining at least 3ft of social distance from others.
      • Gators will not be considered an acceptable option as a face covering.
      • Please review the attached guidance connected to face-covering exemptions.

      • Below is the process for parents/caregivers to request a medical or mask exemption for their child:
        • Up to date (within 60 days) signed medical documentation on a doctor’s letterhead stating the specific diagnosis (reason) why the student must be considered for a medical OR mask exemption.  The signature must be from a practicing: Licensed Independent Practitioner (LIP), including a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Physician Assistant (PA) or a Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP).
        • The medical documentation must be emailed to: medicalexemptions@buffaloschools.org  OR  submitted via U.S. mail to Medical Exemption Office, 427 City Hall, Buffalo, NY 14202.
        • Requests for mask exemptions should also state if the student is unable to wear a face shield as an alternative and if not, the reason why. The LIP must be someone who provides ongoing care for the child.
      • Documentation will be reviewed by a Medical Review Advisory Team and/or Legal Counsel to determine if the mask exemption will be granted.
      • Parent/Guardians will be informed of the decision, and schools will be notified of all approved medical and mask exemptions.

Please see the attached guidance on Mask Exemption Procedures using the following link:  Mask Exemption Procedures

      Social Distancing

      • Students will maintain at least 3ft of social distance (nose to nose) at all times.
      • Classroom desks will be set-up in rows to make provision for 3ft of social distance between all students.
      • Markers and signage are placed on the floors and in the hallways to ensure that students maintain social distance when transitioning.
      • We will be using the cafeteria and classrooms to conduct lunch periods.
      • For the students who will eat in the cafeteria, they will sit four students per table (maximum).

      COVID Testing

Similar to the 2020-21 school year, we will be upholding the randomized COVID testing procedures. However, there are some amendments to the process.

      • We will now be partnering with an outside service provider (Xfinity) who will be assisting our school Nurse with administering COVID test.
      • The district will now administer (PCR) COVID testing which will lead to more accurate results. These test are not invasive and will take approximately 90 seconds to administer.
      • All schools will be testing 30% of their "consented" holistic population including Faculty, Staff, and Students.
      • Faculty & Staff members who are not vaccinated MUST be tested weekly.
      • We will be sending home a COVID consent form with all students on the first day of school. It will also be posted on our webpage. It is imperative that parents complete the forthcoming consent form.
      Thermal Scanners & Health Screeners

      Thermal Scanners & Health Screeners

      • As each individual enters the building, they will undergo a contactless thermal scan to ensure that they're not experiencing a high temperature/fever.
      • Families will no longer be required to complete daily Health Screeners for students. However, the expectation is that parents will keep their children home if they're experiencing symptoms.
      • If a visitor must enter the building, completion of a COVID Health Screener will be required.
      • We will have COVID Health Screeners at a table at the Middle Early College entrance and the Main Office.
      • We will also have laminated (QR) code signs posted near entrances so that visitors can use their smartphones to complete the screener.
