How to recognize and avoid PHISHING ATTACKS:
-
Please be aware that there has been an increase in virus and malware activity leading to ransomware attacks in school districts across New York State. This increase in bot, malware, phishing, and spoofing is particularly damaging to organizations.
Most viruses and malware that are affecting institutions are brought in unwittingly via email, thumb drives, and file downloads and transfers. Phishing emails are especially dangerous. These phishing emails are very sophisticated and often appear to be sent by legitimate and trustworthy sources. Vishing and Smishing are also growing trends where hackers use phones or text messages to try to gain access to your personal data.
Buffalo Public Schools has been very fortunate that we have been unaffected by these malicious attacks. We all must remain vigilant, though, to be on guard and protect ourselves and our data from phishing attacks. You can learn more about all of the various forms of phishing from this infographic. You may be surprised how common phishing has become and how, with just a little insight, you can defend yourself and Buffalo Public Schools from these incursions.
