Dear Members of the Buffalo Public Schools Community,
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year! As the Education Bargain begins its 4th year, we continue our theme of “Going Deeper, Getting Better, Breaking Through.” The over 150 Major District Achievements we have reached have earned us a national “District of Distinction” recognition, while putting us on track to be an entire “District in Good Standing”.
Business leaders, elected officials, institutions of high learning, cultural institutions, and the faith-based community have gone from fearing for our failure to cheering for our successes. Going Deeper, Getting Better, & Breaking Through is a matter of momentum now, with parents as our essential partners. We are confident that our gains in test scores, graduation rates, and the overall culture and climate of our schools is a reflection of our Education Bargain with Students and Parents. The dedication, focus, and hard work of our students, parents, teachers, and staff is paying off. We see the upward trend. We must continue the progress.
As a direct result of the academic and emotional supports we have put in place in grades Pre-K to 12 through the Education Bargain, graduation rates have climbed to a 16-year high of 65% (4 year), 68% (5/6 year), with strongest gains made among students with special needs and English Language Learners. Half of our 14 High Schools boast 4-year graduation rates well above the state average of 80%. 10 New Innovative High Schools and programs have been launched to increase our high school offerings for students, district-wide, and 7 New Career and Technical Education Certifications are offered that align to emerging industry in the WNY region. Since 2015, the number of our Schools in Good Standing has more than tripled from 14 to 46 schools, and the number of Receivership Schools has decreased from 25 to 3. In the interest of accelerating learning, our leading edge technological tools are enviable by any district standards.
What can you do to make this year better? Keep sharpening your craft. Set high expectations for everything you do. Remember, mindset is what separates the best from the rest!
Stay connected and involved! There is strength in numbers, and with the many announcements, events, information, etc., forthcoming about our district and schools, please count yourself in by visiting our website for frequent updates: www.buffaloschools.org. I invite you to follow us on Twitter via @Buffalo_Schools and our Facebook page @buffalopublicschools. If you are a parent, please update your contact information through our Infinite Campus Parent Portal. And please visit our schools at Community School Saturday Academies or any time – to know us is to love us!
In closing, children’s safety will always be Priority One. We have added several security measures this year to ensure the safety of our staff and students. Our state-of-the-art, beautifully refurbished school buildings are gleaming inside and out and our buses are ready to roll. If you are driving, please slow down for children! I wish all of you a safe, healthy, and productive school year!
