February Highlights

  • After a brief pause at the start of 2022, Saturday Academies relaunched on February 5th! Eight schools across the District welcomed families back into their buildings for the first Academies of the year. Many of our schools celebrated Black History Month with their programming, including "Shades of Me" at #50 North Park Community School, "Black Excellence" spotlighting small black-owned businesses at #97 Harvey Austin, and "All Things Diversity" at #80 Highgate Heights.

  • The cold weather did not stop families and students from attending the Saturday Academy at #59/#59A Dr. Charles R. Drew Science Magnet on February 5th. The Academy, themed around sports and snow activities, included various indoor and outdoors programs to choose from. Students received golf instructions from First Tee coaches while purposefully incorporating life skills to strengthen their character.
Outdoors, the Buffalo Museum of Science and Tiff Farms guided students in a snowshoeing walk on the school's front lawn. After the trek, staff members expanded the fun by demonstrating how to make snow angels; this was the first time for some students.
Indoors, another Buffalo Museum of Science team taught participants about how the elements function to make fake snow, while others went to visit the Science Museum. Our Social-emotional Center focused on the importance of managing good mental health, which starts with being hydrated. Everyone received a water bottle that was adorned with positive affirmations. Anything Arts conducted a cake decoration class: all received a cake and the necessary tools to make their masterpiece. Within the Toddler Zone, teachers worked on essential skills for success, children read a story, wrote sentence starters, made a craft, and played games.
  • Check out some of the highlights from #3 D'Youville Porter Campus' Saturday Academy on 2/12/22, which included Create A Mini Book, Urban Salon Cuts, the SPCA, arts & crafts, and much more!
