How do I get assistance, if I don’t understand a question or other information in the registration packet?
Student Placement & Registration staff are available to answer questions and provide clarification. Parents can call 716-816-3717 or email BPSSchoolChoiceApplication@buffaloschools.org

How do I register my child if they are a “New” or “Returning” student?
Parents/Caregivers can pick up a registration packet at Central Registration Center, 33 Ash Street (between Broadway & Sycamore using the Spruce Street entrance) on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or email BPSSchoolChoiceApplication@buffaloschools.org and a staff member will email you a registration packet or the proper forms needed.

Who is considered a “new” or “returning” student?
A student is “new” if he or she has NEVER attended a Buffalo Public School.
A student is “returning” if he or she previously attended a Buffalo Public School and withdrew to attend a Charter, Private, and Parochial or relocated to another city, state or country and enrolled in another school district. BPS Home Schooled students are also considered returning students.

How will I know when I submit the completed registration packet that my child is truly registered?
Once parents/caregivers have dropped off their completed registration packet, at the designated days and times (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-12 noon at 33 Ash Street) and the information has been reviewed and entered into our Student Information System, parents/caregivers will receive an email or telephone call verifying that registration has been completed.

Will Student Placement & Registration contact me if my registration forms are incomplete or need clarification?
Yes. Student Placement and Registration will contact parents/caregivers if any information is needed.

Can I fax, email or mail my registration documents?
Student Placement and Registration will only process registration information using the drop off method. Please deliver completed registration packets to Central Registration Center, 33 Ash Street (between Broadway & Sycamore using the Spruce Street entrance) on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

What if I check my current living situation is: Doubled Up (due to loss of housing or as a result of economic hardship), Shelter, Hotel/Motel, Other Temporary Living Situation or Unaccompanied Youth?
You may be considered a family living in temporary housing, defined as McKinney-Vento. Please email MV@buffaloschools.org or call 816-3717 to receive assistance with registration and transportation.

What are the specific documents needed to complete the registration process?
The following documents must be copied and included in the registration packet to complete the registration process:
- Child’s Proof of Birth
- Documents that Link the Student to the Parent
- Parent/Caregiver’s Photo Identification
- Current Report Card for students entering grades 1- 9 and Transcript for students entering grades 10-12
- Two Proofs of Address
If you have a copy of your child’s immunization records or physical examination, please provide a copy of them with your other registration documents. Please Note: Immunization records and physical examination are not required in order to complete registration. However, they must be provided to your child’s school immediately once school resumes.

Who do I list as the Primary Parent/Guardian?
Only parents listed on the child’s birth certificate, or legal guardians who have obtained custody of the child through the court system.

My child’s father and I have divorced, and he no longer sees my child. Must I list him?
Yes, unless you have court documents that state the father’s parental rights have been legally terminated. Even if you have full custody of the child, you must still list the father. Please ensure all custody documents, or a divorce decree that addresses custody, is provided with your registration documents.

My child lives with my new wife and me. May I list her as a Primary/Parent Guardian?
No, unless your wife legally adopted your child. Your new wife will be listed in the Emergency Contact Section.

Who do I list under Emergency Contact Information?
List any person who you grant permission to pick up your child, or to sign your child out of school, or who can be contacted in the event of an emergency if the school cannot reach you or another custodial parent.
