Ways to Help at Home

  • Here are a few ideas to help your child at home:

    1. Let your child count your change in your purse or your pocket.

    2. Have your child "buy" their dinner by telling them a certain amount and they tell you how many coins they need.  For example:  Milk will be 15 cents so your child tells you what coins they could use to "buy" that milk.

    3. Have your child make flashcards with basic addition and subtraction facts and practice them daily. Also they should begin using multiplication flashcards.

    4. Have your child read a short story to you then read it again to improve fluency. Ask them questions about what they are reading.

    5. Write sentences for you child that have mistakes in them and have your child correct them.  For example: don't start with a capital or end with a period or question mark, spell words wrong or use words that don't make sense.

    6. Have your child count by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s. This helps them prepare to multiply quickly. For example: Student counts: 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30. They then can multiply 3x7.
