  • Welcome to First Grade!  I look forward to working with your little learner this year.

My name is Ms. Tomczak, and I have been at Harvey Austin for 7 years and before here, was at a charter school for 10 years.

I have high expectations for myself and my learners.  They will be given tasks that are meant to challenge them and grow their brain.  They will be taught that you may struggle, but you can do it.  They will achieve and feel pride knowing they were able to do it on their own.  They will become independent thinkers.  I can’t wait for you to see how much growth will happen.

    What will we be learning?

Our big focus is phonics at the beginning of the year.  Phonics is simply the sounds letters make in words.  So, we do a lot of practice on what sounds single letters make, how we blend those sounds together to make words, and the patterns we see in those words.

We also focus on sight words, those are the words that learners recognize without having to sound out.  We practice these through games and other activities.

In math they will extend their knowledge in adding and subtracting, tackle those pesky word problems, and learn to tell time, and describe shapes.

In science they will explore sound, light, life cycles and so much more.

Social Studies is our time to learn about the world around us.  We use a lot of picture books to teach during this time.  Through rich read al,-ouds your child will learn about all the different kinds of people that make up our world, how those people live in the world, and what makes us a good citizen of the world.

    How do we connect?

I welcome constant communication between us.  It is so important that we support each other in your child’s learning.  Our days are hectic and I know we don’t always have that time to stop and chat, but DOJO is a very useful tool.  It’s a way to quickly give each other message

about events, struggles, questions about homework, etc.  So please get connected to that when the dojo papers come home with your child.  It makes it so easy to stay connected.
