Degrees and Certifications:
Hello! I teach second grade here at Makowski. I have been teaching for 22 years. I love reading, camping, and spending summers at the beach. I am married to Mr. Culm and we have 2 daughters, Julia and Emily. I have a dog too. His name is Reese.
School is temporarily closed until April 20th. Your child wil be distance learning until then. I am here to assist in any way possible. It would really benefit your child to sign into Clever everday. To go to Clever:Go to www.buffaloschools.orgClick on STUDENTS on the right sideClick on CleverLog in using your Clever username and password (Contact me if you don't have that)MathHe or she should work on Moby Max for at least 30 minutes a day and then maybe prodigy for 20-30 minutes a day. They can also use this time to memorize addition and subtraction facts. There are many sprints in the students' white math module book as well. You can go to engageny.org to find all of the second grade math modules. It is where I get all of my daily math lessons. We left off on Module 6 Lesson 9. They can practice measuring things at home and/ or baking with you to practice measurements. You can lay money out for them to count. They always need practice with that. You can teach them how to tell time using an analog clock (a regular clock). Playing bored games is a fun past time as well. If your child has their addition and subtraction facts memorized they can practice multiplication facts to prepare for 3rd grade.Reading/WritingYour child should also go onto MyOn (on clever) or Epic (class code is bag7708) for at least 30 minutes a day to read. Students can get a notebook and write a few sentences about what they read to share with you. They can write about facts they learned if they read nonfiction or they can write a summary of what the story was about or character traits of the main character. They can write their opinion about what they read as well, like a book review. If your child doesn't know all of their sight words they should practice memorizing those for at least 15 minutes a day. If they know their sight words they can write sentences. I told them that a good sentence has about 7 words in it.**Be sure to check out Michele Gephart's (Reading teacher) webpage on the Stanley Makowski website under Teacher Pages as there are a ton of resources about Reading and Writing!Phonics/ReadingYour child should go onto Lexia Core 5 (on clever) for at least 30 minutes a day as well. This program teaches your child at their level so that they can be successful.Once again, please let me know how I can be of assisstance.Mrs. Culm
