Here's what's going on in Mrs. Gionis' English classes during the months of November and December, 2016:
English 4:
We will be studying Benazir Bhutto's 2007 speech, "Ideas Live On," and William Shakespeare's tragic play, Julius Caesar. Both works explore the central ideas of how governments exercise their power, as well as the relationship between the individual and the state.
English 3:
We have started W.E.B. DuBois' nonfiction text, The Souls of Black Folk. We are focusing on chapter 1 where we follow DuBois from his early realization of being "different from the others" because of the color of his skin, to his thoughts and ideas on how to gain "a truer self-awareness", and to hopefully, stop seeing himself through the eyes of racists.
We then will read Booker T. Washington's, "The Atlanta Compromise" and discuss it in relation to DuBois' work.
Following this is a poem by Audre Lorde, "The House of Yemanja", and another poem, "How to Write the Great American Indian Novel" by Sherman Alexie. These texts all deal with discrimination, racial-identity, and self-identity.
