Welcome to Newcomer Academy @ Lafayette

  • Principal Jones

There is much to be thankful for at Newcomer Academy at Lafayette. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve as your child’s principal for another year. I am equally thankful for being a member of a committed community and having a dedicated staff that puts the needs of children first.
The staff and administration of Newcomer Academy are thankful for your trust and continued partnership. Through active collaboration, we are creating home/school partnerships that encourage ALL students to flourish and Dare to be GREAT. We have amazing students striving to achieve their dreams and greatness. Your nurturing and tender touch laid the foundation to make this possible.
Since, the start of the school year, the entire faculty has continued to engage in practices best described as cultural competency, which is supported by the work promoted by TAC-D from New York University.
“Cultural competency is the ability to successfully teach students who come from cultures other than our own. It entails developing certain personal and interpersonal awareness and sensitivities, developing certain bodies of cultural knowledge, and mastering a set of skills.”
As educators living in a diverse world and working in an ethnically, economically, and culturally diverse community such as Newcomer Academy, it is critically important that we develop an understanding of cultural competence and a willingness to amend our practices and those of colleagues, friends and family members, when needed.

  • Newcomer staff

The staff at Newcomer Academy is dedicated to educating the whole child.  Students go on many field trips, volunteer in the community and particpate in competitions such as the August Wilson Monologues and History Day.  The teachers care more about the people the students become than the scores they receive.
