NYSAA

The Unique Learning program is used for Mathematics, English Language Arts, and content areas of Science and Social Studies.  It is a standards-based set of interactive tools specifically designed for students with special needs to access the general curriculum.  Student progress is tracked by a monthly pre and post assessment for each thematic unit.  Students will also receive multiple benchmark assessments in English Language Arts and Math throughout the year.

Students taking the NYSAA will be assessed in school using a computer based program called Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM).  The assessment tasks are aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics at their grade level and highly modified based on their answers to ensure our students are fairly assessed at their individual level.

This is a community based classroom. All outings will extend the program beyond the walls of the classroom and provide valuable opportunities for students to practice social and academic skills across various settings.  The field trips, metro training and community outings also allow for community instruction/safety skills to take place.  For instance, students may visit the Buffalo Public Library, Dollar Store, Tops, as well as our work placements.

 Meet the Teacher

I graduated from Daemen College with my Master’s Degree in Special Education.  Additionally, I have my New York State professional teaching certification in both Special Education and Childhood Education.  After school, I started teaching at Autism Services.  With this being said, my skills in differentiated instruction, multi-sensory learning, classroom management, knowledge of the Core Curriculum, knowledge of NYSAA, and knowledge of the Unique Curriculum allow me to meet the needs of every student.

I have taught diverse groups of students in various settings.  My past experiences taught me the value of patience and the importance of empowering students.  I work closely with every student and related service providers in order to create the most successful individualized support for everyone.  I also make it a priority to stay connected to family members and/or caregivers.

I believe in open communication.  Please do not hesitate to contact me.  This is how we can best meet your child’s needs.  I look forward to working with you!
