Students give back to the community
Members of The Liberty Partnerships Program at Buffalo State College joined forces to spread a little more happiness this holiday season. The Liberty Partnerships Program had students from Lafayette International High School, West Hertel Academy, and Herman Badillo Academy step up to lend a helping hand.
On November 21st, 2019, students at each school volunteered to bake up some yummy treats to hand out at Friends of Night People on Buffalo’s West Side. Friends of Night People is a charitable organization that helps the poor, homeless and destitute in Buffalo New York. They provide food, clothing and much more to those in need. Our students were more than happy to participate.
Students worked together with their peers and with Program Counselors Vanessa Pereira, Wayne Woodburn, and Maria Lascarro, to bake chocolate chip and red velvet cookies from scratch. Students then packaged them and packed them up to be disbursed to those having a hot meal at Friends of Night People.
On Friday November 22nd, 2019 the students arrived on time and ready to help. Our 7th and 8th grade students passed out the cookies to the guest eating a hot meal downstairs. They helped clean up and held conversation with the guest about the LP program and what we do.
Meanwhile our high school students were busy upstairs assisting those in need with filling their bags with warm clothes, shoes, blankets, gloves, personal hygiene products and, of course ,our homemade cookies.
The Liberty Partnerships Program at Buffalo State College would like to give a big thanks to the administration and staff at Lafayette International, including Say Yes, Herman Badillo Academy and West Hertel Academy for supporting our staff and the students during this volunteer opportunity. Also, a big thank you to Buffalo State Colleges LPP Tutors/Mentors and members of Buffalo State College Organizations, Adelante Students Latinos, and Powerful United Ladies Striving to Elevate for participating and assisting our students.
Lastly, we would like to give a big thanks to Friends of Night People for allowing us to come in and volunteer. The Liberty Partnerships Program at Buffalo State College wishes you all a happy holiday!
