1619 Project

On January 7, 8, and 9, the District's Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Initiatives Committee  will roll out the 1619 Project as a curriculum infusion model at grades 7-12. All 11th and 12th grade Social Studies teachers and students will receive a copy of the NY Times magazine (August 2019) which commemorates the 400th anniversary of the fateful moment when 20 enslaved Africans were sold to colonist  near Point Comfort, a coastal port in the British colony of Virginia. The 1619 Project materials and resources are generously provided by the Pulitzer Center. The Buffalo Public Schools will infuse 1619 Project  resources into the mainstream English and Social Studies curriculum via NY State Standards alignment  at grades 7-12 in an effort to teach the legacy of the system of slavery and its impact on American history and society today. These efforts will in turn,  render a true history of the institution of slavery for all students, a history which is often silenced in mainstream curriculum and textbooks.
