Sten Htoo - a Newcomer School Great Grad

Senior Focus! Amy Overfield, school counselor at Newcomer Academy at Lafayette writes about a great grad:

Our school is loaded with incredible students, all of whom have amazing stories. Every Newcomer student immigrated to the US from various countries, most of them as refugees.

One of our seniors, Sten Htoo, is an incredible young man, and a friend to all of his peers. Sten was born in Thailand and lived in a refugee camp there until 2013 when his family was picked to come to America. Sten moved to New York State, then to Kansas for 2 years, then here to Buffalo, where he became a student at Newcomer Academy. He speaks Karen, Karenni, Burmese and English. He has excelled in his course work and Regents Exams. His Regents Diploma will have a CDOS credential (meaning he completed extra coursework and over a hundred hours of community service to earn this) AND a NYS Seal of Biliteracy. For the Biliteracy seal, Sten completed research about the role of nurses and how to celebrate and honor their humanitarian work. He presented his research before a panel of teachers and a pediatric physician.

Sten will attend to Houghton College in the Fall of 2019 to begin his studies in Nursing. He would like to be a Mulit-Lingual Nurse in a hospital where he can assist people, share his kindness, and especially focus on helping immigrants.

Kudos to Sten for his hard work, and to counselor Amy Overfield who recognizes a great grad - and helps him on his way to helping others!
