Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) program
Buffalo Police Chief Aaron Young, School Resource Officer (SRO) Armonde Badger and SRO Lance Woods lead a mentor group at Community School #53 using the Gang Resistance Education and Training program (G.R.E.A.T.) curriculum. The program has weekly meetings and periodically invites guest speakers or plans field trips, with approximately 20 young men in grades 6-8 participating.
Last week, Shaq Lawson of the Buffalo Bills spoke to about the importance of focusing in school and having life goals. He encouraged the young men to stay within a group of friends that support success! Shaq answered their questions for over an hour, signed autographs and took pictures.
Yesterday, the group was able to view a private screening of the movie Harriet at the Regal Theater. Director of Social Studies Charles Brandy arranged for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. - Phi Omega chapter, to sponsor the cost of the trip for the students.
