Jesse Ketchum Awards

For 150 years, Jesse Ketchum medals have been awarded to eighth grade students with the highest grade point average in the Buffalo City School District. This award honors the legacy of Jesse Ketchum, a notable figure in Buffalo history, who is credited with donating land and buildings to establish the first teacher training center in Buffalo. This site, Buffalo Normal School, was the precursor to Buffalo State Teachers College.

This year’s celebration is especially significant because it marks the 150th anniversary of the Jesse Ketchum Awards, along with the 150th anniversary of the founding of Buffalo State College! To commemorate this momentous occasion, we are most honored that Buffalo State College President, Dr. Katherine Conway-Turner will provide the Keynote Address, and Mayor Brown and Superintendent Cash will bring greetings and congratulatory remarks at this year's 150th Jesse Ketchum Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, October 19th, 2021, at 6:30pm on the virtual Zoom Platform.
