            • ATTENTION PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS

Effective immediately, until June 12th, parents can submit student work at all BPS food distribution school sites.  There will be a work collection bin at each food distribution site along with large envelopes.  For safety purposes, parents will need to bring a pen with them. On the envelope, parents/caregivers will need to write:

              Student's Name

              School Name

              Teacher's Name and Grade

Work will then be sorted and taken to the proper school until the Friday, June 12th deadline.

PLEASE NOTE: On-site collection applies only if you have not been able to submit work online.  If you have submitted work to teachers electronically, you do not need to also submit that work at the food distribution sites.

Important Dates to Close the 2019-2020 School Year Dear Buffalo Public Schools Community:

There has been a change to the original District calendar for 2019-20. The following dates should be taken into consideration for the final submission of school/coursework and registering final grades:

June 17 - Last day of instruction

June 22 - Last day for teachers

The Instructional Guidance Document has been updated to reflect that Quarter 3 will be extended until June 17. Students may still turn in work until June 17.

The Quarter 3 grade will be counted as 50% of the overall grade. Students in grades K-2 will receive a rating of Incomplete (I), Satisfactory (S), or Outstanding (O) for their Quarter 3 and final overall marks. Students in grades 3 & 4 will receive a numeric mark for Quarter 3 and a final overall rating of Incomplete (I), Satisfactory (S), or Outstanding (O).

Information and next steps will be forthcoming regarding summer instruction.

Hardcopy work, labeled with student, teacher name, and school name can be turned in at collection bins that will be at all Food distribution sites beginning next week.

            • Dear Parents and Families,

Governor Cuomo closed schools for the remainder of this academic year.  As you may have felt, this news to us came with mixed reaction.  While we are saddened, we will not be able to come together to end our year with our usual celebrations, we also recognize the need to keep our students, staff and our families safe and continue our social distancing practices.

The Makowski community understands the stress of educating your child from home and the challenges we all face balancing our responsibilities during this time.  Know, our teachers and staff will continue to be here to assist you with any educational or social and emotional supports for you, your child or your family.

Be comforted in knowing we are beginning to plan for the reopening of schools in the Fall.  This will include helping students adjust back to the school environment and their academic needs to reach grade level standards.  We will be working to ensure the buildings are clean and sanitized for the protection of your student.

Thank you for helping your child complete assignments.  Thank you for submitting work pictures.  Thank you for answering our calls and thank you for participating in video conferences.  Please continue to partner with us during this time apart so that we can be together soon.

              Be well.  Be Safe.

            • Greetings Makowski Families,

During this traumatic time, we know that many of you are feeling deep concern for the health and safety of your family and friends.  Therefore, we want to alleviate any additional stress that may be related to grade reporting. The Buffalo City School District is working closely with the other large city school districts in the State to identify best practice and to try to adopt a uniform approach to grading during this unprecedented event.

Please note that Quarter 3 grades will not be finalized until we are able to provide fair, consistent, grading procedures for all students.    In the meantime, our staff will continue to make every effort to connect with students, review student assignments - emphasizing student effort and completion - and provide students with timely and encouraging feedback.

We realize that this global pandemic experience is very difficult for you and your family.  Please take care of yourselves and continue all precautionary wellness measures.

Thank you and have have good night.

What is the Primary Years Program (PYP)?

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Primary Years Programme is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12.

The PYP transdisciplinary framework focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both at school and beyond.

Informed by research into how students learn, how educators teach, and the principles and practice of effective assessment, the programme places a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning.

              What the PYP offers students

By choosing to implement the PYP, schools will develop students’ academic, social and emotional wellbeing, focusing on international-mindedness and strong personal values. The PYP nurtures independent learning skills, encouraging every student to take responsibility for their learning.

The programme incorporates local and global issues into the curriculum, asking students to look at six related, transdisciplinary themes and to consider the links between them. The themes include ‘who we are’, ‘where we are in place and time’ and ‘how the world works’.

              PYP Curriculum

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) presents schools with a comprehensive plan for high quality, international education.

It provides schools with a curriculum framework of essential elements — the knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action that young students need to equip them for successful lives, both now and in the future.

Schools work with the five elements to construct a rigorous and challenging primary curriculum for international education.

The PYP aims to create a curriculum that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant for learners in the 3–12 age range. The curriculum is transdisciplinary, meaning that it focuses on issues that go across subject areas.

The PYP is organized according to:

              Mission Statement

"Makowski is a community that recognizes, respects, and celebrates diversity.  Through inquiry, we nurture and educate our children to become compassionate life-long learners.  Our students will grow to become a positive influence on their community and the world."
