As students move into the 5-7 and 6-9 learning communities, they become increasingly independent learners. They begin to ask deeper questions, collaborate more with their peers, and take greater responsibility for their work and their role within the classroom community.

Students receive instruction in a variety of settings including individual lessons, small-group instruction, and occasional whole-group lessons. Community meetings, collaborative projects, and peer learning opportunities help students build leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Montessori materials continue to support learning while helping students transition from concrete experiences toward more abstract thinking. As students gain confidence and master, they are encouraged to apply their knowledge through exploration, discussion, research, and real-world connections.

Like the 3-6 program, these classrooms include uninterrupted work periods that allow students to work independently, collaborate with classmates, or meet with teachers for lessons and support. Instruction aligns with New York State learning standards while integrating Montessori practices across language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and cultural studies.
