The 9-12 learning community (Upper Elementary) builds upon the foundation established in the earlier Montessori years. As students grow, they develop greater independence, abstract thinking, and responsibility for their learning. They are increasingly challenged to think critically, collaborate with others, and apply their knowledge in meaningful ways.

Teachers often work collaboratively to meet students’ academic and social-emotional needs. Within the multi-age classroom, students learn from one another, share ideas, and take on leadership roles within the community. Some students may choose to serve as Junior Peace Ambassadors, helping to promote student voice, leadership, and community building.

While hands-on materials remain an important part of learning, students increasingly move toward abstract thinking, research, discussion, and written expression. They are encouraged to explore topics in greater depth, solve complex problems, and make connections across subject areas.

Learning extends beyond the classroom through experiences such as Montessori Outdoor Learning Education (MOLE), field studies, and grade-level trips that help students apply their skills in real-world settings.

Note: At Bennett Park Montessori, sixth-grade students learn as a single-grade cohort to support their transition into the middle school years and prepare them for the 12-14 program.
