Pelion Community Garden
The garden is located on the border of both the historic Fruit Belt and Cold Spring neighborhoods at 206 Best Street. In January of 2011, we began the transformation of four vacant city lots into a school and community garden. Today, the Pelion Community Garden at City Honors School in Buffalo, NY, is a thriving outdoor learning space that engages students and our community with the natural world. The project has truly been a team effort. Students, parents, nonprofit organizations, local companies and countless volunteers have contributed to make this garden grow!

Pelion Community Garden at City Honors School
The name "Pelion Community Garden" was selected by the 5th and 6th graders at City Honors School. In Greek Mythology, Mount Pelion was the homeland of Chiron the Centaur, tutor of many ancient Greek heroes, and the beloved mascot of City Honors School.
Our garden is busy with activity. We have created a full calendar of hands-on opportunities for students to learn about plants, nutrition, science, and sustainable living.
Pelion Community Garden Has Many Different Features:
A rain garden full of of native shrubs, perennials, and pollinator buffets
Almost a dozen raised beds for vegetables, fruits, and herbs that are planted and tended by our students
A living fence of sunflowers, edible flowers, honeysuckle, and other flowering vines
Almost a dozen fruit trees including cherry, plum, peach, and native serviceberry
A First Peoples garden which incorporates the Three Sisters crops, a corn maze, and a colorful trellis for vertical growing
Community vegetable beds that will be planted by and tended to by many families from our neighborhood
We host regular volunteer opportunities the first Thursday and first Saturday of each month from April to November. We also welcome corporate volunteer days where students work alongside community members to complete garden projects. We also offer many free workshops that teach the public about gardening and growing vegetables.
