On this day in women’s history, March 2, 1860, Susanna M. Salter was born — she went on to become the first woman elected as a mayor (Argonia, Kansas) and the first woman elected to any political office in the United States.

On February 27, 1988, Debi Thomas became the first African American to win a Winter Olympic medal in figure skating at the 1988 Winter Olympics, earning bronze and breaking barriers in the sport.
February 27: This Day in Black History — In 1970, Maya Angelou published I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, inspiring generations through resilience and truth.
February 26: This Day in Black History — In 1972, Jubilee Day was recognized in Florida, honoring the day enslaved people learned they were free.

February 25: This Day in Black History — In 1964, Muhammad Ali won the heavyweight title and became one of the most influential athletes in history.
February 24: This Day in Black History — In 1926, Carter G. Woodson launched launched a movement, which later grew into Black History Month.
