Many claim that the late Harvey Austin was the best high school athlete in Buffalo history. As an athlete, husband, father and educator, he was much more than that. 

 During the early 1950s, Mr. Austin's exploits as a high jumper and basketball player at Emerson Vocational High School were well known throughout the Buffalo Community.  He set records in the high jump at both the state and National Junior Olympics. 

 As a basketball player, Harvey made the Buffalo Evening News All-High first team, three years in a row (1950-1952).  During his sophomore year, he scored 46 points for Emerson and set the single-game scoring record.  He continued his basketball career while serving in the U.S. Army.  He was a three-year starter for Purdue University. 

 Harvey received his Bachelor of Physical Education degree from Purdue University and pursued graduate studies at Canisius College, the State University of New York at Buffalo and State University College at Buffalo.  He began his career as a physical education instructor in the Buffalo Public Schools at School #53.  He later served in the same capacity at McKinley Vocational High School, East High School and Hutchinson Technical High School. 

 As a basketball coach, his record was 174 wins - 108 losses.  He was 110 - 25 as a track coach.  His cross-country teams posted a 115 - 47 dual meet record, won one city championship and shared another. 

 Harvey Austin is best remembered as a pleasant person, easy to talk to, possessing a sense of humor and a broad shoulder to lean on.   For many, he was more than a friend, he was a father figure.  Most of all he was a gentleman whose service and dedication left an imprint on the Buffalo Public Schools that will endure for years to come.  We are proud to name our school after Harvey Austin and continue his legacy.
