New York State’s New Distraction-Free Schools Law
Effective September 2025, New York State’s new Distraction-Free, No Personal Smartphones/Electronics policy will go into effect. Please take time to prepare your child(ren) for this change, as outlined in EdLaw Title 2, Section 55 §2803: Use of Internet-Enabled Devices During the School Day.
What This Means for Students
From first bell to final dismissal, all personal internet-capable devices must be stored.
This includes smartphones, smartwatches, cell phones with internet capability, iPads, and similar devices.
Students may use school-issued internet-enabled devices (such as district-provided laptops or tablets) for classroom instruction only.
Why This Matters
Research consistently shows that limiting personal device use during the school day improves academic performance, reduces behavioral issues, and helps students focus on learning. It also supports better mental health and overall well-being.
Morning Drop-Off
Upon arrival, all students will place their phones in a designated Cell Phone locker based on their 8th period class.
Lockers will be clearly labeled and located in the hallway as students enter the building.
After arrival, lockers will be locked until the end of the day.
Students who arrive late to school will follow the same procedure.
During the School Day
Cell phones and internet-connected personal devices are not permitted for use and must remain in the cell phone locker.
Any student found with a device out (including in hallways, restrooms, or classrooms) will have it confiscated immediately.
Bluetooth headphones or earbuds are not allowed. The school has corded ear buds available for students.
iPads, Tablets, and Smartwatches all fall under internet capable devices as well and are prohibited during the day.
End of Day Pick-Up
Staff will return storage containers to each 8th period classroom before dismissal.
Teachers will distribute devices directly to students.
Students may only collect their own phone. Unauthorized retrieval or tampering will result in disciplinary action.
Students who get picked up early will need to report to security to have a staff member retrieve their cell phone from their last period cell phone locker.
Senior Early Release
Students on early release will store their phones in the EARLY RELEASE cell phone locker.

Call the Main Office: 716-816-4778 (for urgent or time-sensitive matters)
Email your student using their district email address.
According to the Buffalo Public Schools Code of Conduct, “Students, parents, guardians or caregivers are on notice that the District assumes no liability for the damage, destruction, theft, or loss of personal internet-enabled devices on school property. When making the decision to bring such devices to school, the student and parent, guardian or caregiver jointly and separately assume the risk of potential damage, destruction, theft, or loss.”
