Description:
Stand-Alone English as a New Language (ENL) courses are designed to support English Language Learners (ELLs) in developing proficiency in English. Instruction is aligned with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards and focuses on building students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The course emphasizes academic English and literacy development to help students succeed in content-area classes across the curriculum. ENL instruction is scaffolded to meet students’ language needs and promotes language acquisition through a supportive, language-rich environment. The level and intensity of services are based on each student’s English language proficiency, as measured by the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT).
