Buffalo Public Schools is dedicated to providing quality instruction, serving over 34,000 students in over 60 facilities across the district, each and every day. Buffalo Public Schools Substitute Teachers play an important role in improving student achievement. In addition, substitute teaching provides an opportunity to gain experience and see first-hand what it takes to be a successful teacher in the Buffalo Public Schools.

Substitute Teacher Responsibilities

Substitute Teachers are utilized by Buffalo Public Schools, on a per diem/as-needed basis, to cover the classroom in the absence of the regular (full-time) Teacher.  The primary role of the Substitute Teacher is to continue student learning along the continuum, established by the absent full-time teacher.  The responsibilities of the Substitute Teacher in the classroom may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Planning lessons

  • Teaching students

  • Managing the classroom

  • Performing administrative tasks

  • Promoting positive student behavior

  • Ensuring the safety and security of the students

Pay Rate

Substitute Teachers, providing day-to-day service, are paid at the per diem contractual rate starting at $121.00 per day, for actual days worked.  Substitute Teachers do not receive any benefits.  Assignments can be picked up in either half day or full day increments. 

Substitute Teachers are paid for actual days worked in accordance with the following schedule of daily rates effective as of November 18, 2021:

The increments are paid as indicated on the basis of each day of service as a substitute teacher. 

Bonus Pay:  A Substitute Teacher is eligible for a $1,000 bonus if 50 full days are worked in a semester.  There are two semesters per year.  The first beginning on the first day of school, ending on the last day of exams in January.  The second semester begins on the Monday after exams (usually end of January or beginning of February - this changes each year) and ends on the last day of school. 

Substitute Teachers are represented by the Substitutes United/Buffalo Union.

Eligibility Requirements 

The minimum eligibility requirements to apply for a Substitute Teacher position are the following:

  • A Bachelor's Degree  

  • Authorization to work in the US

Continuation of Substitute Teacher Status 

To remain an active Substitute Teacher for the next school year, the substitute is required to work a minimum of 20 full days (two half days equal a whole day) of service during the current school year.  The school year begins at the beginning of September and ends in late June.
